The woman you love has breast cancer, how do you feel?

“ Every male has been hit in the groin at least once in their life. When I was told of Janice’s cancer that feeling of being hit was magnified 10 times.”

“No-one asked how I was”.

Should you even be considering your own feelings when the woman you love is the one with cancer?

Yes, you should. A diagnosis of cancer affects everyone, including you.

It’s never easy to discuss your feelings. You may not know what to say and you may not want to seek help for yourself when you believe the major support should be for the woman you love. Most men find it easier to put their own needs on hold. While it is tempting to try to protect her by not expressing your feelings, or by trying to be positive, it is important that the woman you love knows how you feel.

Provide support through listening without judging. When she is distressed, allow her to express her feelings.
