Mouth ulcers

Mouth ulcers can be very uncomfortable and can affect the amount and type of food you are able to eat. Mouth ulcers may be caused by chemotherapy or may develop for reasons unknown. Inform your doctor about any mouth ulcers that you experience, so that it can be evaluated and controlled.

Treatment of mouth ulcers includes:

  • pain relief such as aspirin, paracetamol or
  • a topical or local anaesthetic treatment of any thrush or other infections of the mouth or throat

Some practical suggestions to help relieve mouth ulcers are listed. These suggestions are based on the experience of health professionals working with women diagnosed with cancer, and from women themselves. Practical suggestions to help relieve mouth ulcers include:

  • Use a solution of sodium bicarbonate as a mouth wash
  • Keeping your teeth clean may prevent infection from occurring. Use only a soft toothbrush to avoid aggravating your gums.
  • An analgesic gel or mouth wash can help relieve the discomfort.
  • See an oncology or community nurse for specific advice.
